Project of the month: Pavilion Bar, Cromer Pier

F. Ball’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive was chosen to install vinyl sheet floorcoverings at the Pavilion Bar on Norfolk’s Cromer Pier for its temperature tolerant and water resistant properties.

Contractors from A W Flooring (Norfolk) Ltd. were hired by North Norfolk District Council to refurbish the bar floor ahead of the filming of an episode of BBC television programme ‘Antiques Roadshow’ from the pier, in anticipation of the thousands of visitors it would attract.

To begin with, old carpet tiles, which previously covered the bar’s 120mfloor area, were removed. This exposed the pier’s 151-metre-long wooden boardwalk that stretches out over the North Sea, which was overboarded with 6mm Hanson SP101 plywood sheets, securely fixed to the timber boardwalk.

Staying dry

Contractors then used Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS to install oak-effect Altro Wood Safety vinyl sheets throughout the entire bar area.

Unlike other water-based adhesives, Styccobond F49 develops an incredibly strong, water resistant bond, making it the ideal choice for an installation situated directly above the sea, as well as in other areas that will be subject to damp and humid conditions.

Temperature tolerance

The adhesive combines pressure sensitive qualities and temperature tolerance, providing high initial tack, allowing vinyl sheet, tiles or planks to be held firmly in place once positioned by the contractor. When cured, the high bond strength will securely hold vinyl floorcoverings in place within a wide temperature range; between -20°C and 60°C. This prevents the expanding and contracting of vinyl floorcoverings, which can lead to tenting and gapping at the interface of adjacent tiles or planks over time.

Commenting on the project, A W Flooring (Norfolk) Ltd. director, Andrew Webster, said: “We use F. Ball products most days because they’re solid, reliable, and great to use. Styccobond F44 and F46 are our go-to adhesives, but we used Styccobond F49 on the advice of our F. Ball technical representative for its water-resistant properties, which was perfect for this job. You can always trust in the yellow bucket.”
