Project of the month: Extension with floor-to-ceiling windows

Every month, we pick a project that has used F. Ball products to their full potential. This month we look at a residential property in Barrow-upon-Soar.

Project overview

J & S Flooring of Leicester were contracted to install 30m2 of luxury vinyl tiles in an upstairs extension, where a chipboard floor had been over-boarded with moisture-tolerant plywood. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the extension meant that the floor would be exposed to temperature fluctuations, which can cause problems for vinyl floorcoverings adhered with conventional pressure sensitive adhesives, particularly vinyl tiles and wood planks.

Preparing the subfloor

Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound was first used to fill in the gaps between plywood boards and create a smooth and even surface. Stopgap 500 Micro can be used to create a smooth surface on plywood, existing smoothing underlayments, sand/cement screeds and other absorbent surfaces before installing floorcoverings. It is also rapid drying; applied at micro-coat thickness, it is ready to receive floorcoverings after 25 minutes.

 A luxury finish

Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive was then used to secure luxury vinyl tiles in place. The innovative formula of the adhesive has been specially developed for use in conditions where the temperature can fluctuate between -20°C and +60°C, such as conservatories and other buildings with many windows. Unlike previously available temperature tolerant adhesives, it offers the instant grab of pressure sensitive adhesives, making the installation process quick and easy. When fully cured, it has the ultra-high bond strength required to keep tiles secure as temperatures vary.
