Product Focus: Stopgap 600 Base

We put F. Ball’s deep section compound in the spotlight for this month’s product focus.

What is it?

Stopgap 600 Base is a fast-drying, low-odour deep section base compound, which is used where floor levels need to be raised quickly and economically, in areas that will be subject to light to heavy traffic. It can be applied in thicknesses between 5–50mm in one single application. It can then be capped with a compatible Stopgap smoothing underlayment ready for the installation of a new floorcovering.

Where is it used?

Predominantly where floor levels need to be raised by more than 10mm – beyond what can be achieved using most levelling compounds. For example, after removing ceramic tiles and adhesives, or where subfloors need to be raised to the same level throughout an area.

Stopgap 600 Base can be applied over structurally sound absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors, including sand/cement screed, concrete, granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins, ceramic and quarry tiles and Stopgap waterproof surface membranes.

What’s different about it?

Stopgap 600 Base was developed to overcome problems that can occur if standard levelling compounds are applied at too great a thickness. These include cracks caused by the expansion and subsequent contraction of compounds as a result of the exothermic nature of the reaction between cement and water, as well as weaknesses caused by the separation of compounds into constituent components (e.g. sand, aggregate and cement) when applied in thicker sections.

Something you might not know about the product:

To minimise the capacity for thermal expansion, the level of cement in the product is reduced. This means the water content of the mix can also be decreased, helping to limit the flow of the product and minimise the separation of components.

Stopgap 600 Base also cures to chemically bind all remaining water in the mixture, eliminating the need to wait for all of the water to evaporate naturally and dramatically decreasing the drying time.
