Quick fire questions with Claire Butt from The Polished Concrete Co.

Name: Claire Butt
Age: 48
Company: The Polished Concrete Co.
Job Title: Managing Partner

How did you get into the flooring industry?

I have a construction background from working in international property, and I studied fine art so I’ve always enjoyed combining creativity with flooring. The Polished Concrete Co. is a family business, which I manage with my husband John.

What’s been the biggest change in the industry in the past 10 years/since you started?

The industry was a lot smaller seven or eight years ago, and while products have improved during this time, it means reputation and the power of word of mouth has become increasingly important.

Looking forwards, what do you think will be the biggest change in the next 10 years?

As specialists in polished concrete floor, we’ve already begun to see a switch in popularity from industrial to more colourful luxurious finishes, such as acid stained concrete.

What’s the worst job you’ve been on?

It’s always difficult trying to work in the changeable British weather. And animals can complicate things too; cats and birds have ruined jobs in the past by walking all over wet concrete, which is very frustrating!

And what’s the best?

We’ve been lucky to work on some very satisfying and creative jobs over the years. We had a beautiful lakeside residential job in Ipswich recently, as well as a residential property in Dulwich, London, which actually featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs!

Do you have go-to-products for certain jobs?

We use Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane and Stopgap 800 Wearcoat levelling compound by F. Ball on almost every job we do. Together they ensure that the concrete is rock hard and won’t crack, as well as being suitable products for underfloor heating.

What do you like best about the job?

Definitely the customers. We’ve had some very interesting and creative clients over the years, such as Idris Elba’s PA, whose Spanish finca property we refurbished in Ibiza. We’ve also collaborated with the UK’s leading home manufacturer, Facit Homes, who create cutting-edge sustainable homes that are both modern and low energy.

What is your least favourite thing about the job?

My least favourite thing is when difficult builders treat me differently because I’m a woman. That sort of attitude doesn’t belong in the 21st century!
