60 Second Interview: Chris Slater from CS Flooring

Quick fire questions with Chris Slater from CS Flooring, Surrey.

Name: Chris Slater
Age: 47
Company: CS Flooring
Job Title: Director

How did you get into the flooring industry?
I used to help out at my stepfather’s flooring business, as a Saturday job and during the holidays. Never looked back.

What’s been the biggest change in the industry in the past 10 years/since you started?
There’s been a noticeable improvement in the quality of levelling compounds and adhesives, resulting in higher quality floor finishes.

Looking forwards, what do you think will be the biggest change in the next 10 years?
I think the lack of youngsters coming in to the industry will be a big challenge; contractors are retiring and not being replaced.

What’s the worst job you’ve been on?
That would be a long list! On domestic jobs, we’re often faced with members of the public who can be quite difficult, which is unpleasant at the time but you move on. I prefer commercial jobs!

And what’s the best?
Definitely the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London. It’s a stunning old building that dates back to the 19th century, and we were working with great products and designs.

Do you have go-to products for certain jobs?
Our three main products are Stopgap 1200 Pro and Stopgap 300 HD levelling compounds, and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive by F. Ball.

What do you like best about the job?
I enjoy dealing with people day-to-day, especially when you get to know them over a long period of time.

What’s your least favourite thing about the job?
Chasing payments!
