F. Ball’s Products Make the Grade at Kings College London

A range of F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s high-performance flooring adhesives have been used to refurbish the floors of bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens in Kings College London’s student halls in Hampstead.

Voted the Sunday Times University of the Year 2010/2011, Kings College London is one of the UK’s leading universities, with six separate accommodation halls. The Hampstead accommodation features 431 self-catered single bedrooms with shared kitchens, bathrooms and TV rooms/lounges on each floor. Refurbished every year as part of the ongoing maintenance of the buildings, Flooring Contractors, Futura Contracts, removed the old floorcoverings and refitted the whole building with new floorcoverings ready for the intake of new students in September.

The existing carpet and carpet tile floorcoverings in the bedrooms were removed and all remaining adhesive residues were removed before Futura Contracts installed new Gradus carpet tiles to the subfloor using Styccobond F41 Carpet Tile Tackifier. A solvent free, acrylic tackifier, F41 is designed to provide a permanently tacky film which prevents ‘loose lay’ carpet tiles from moving under normal traffic but enables them to be lifted and replaced easily when required.

New Polyflor rubber floorcovering was also installed throughout the corridors and in the small washroom area in each of the 431 self-contained bedrooms. Styccobond F58 Rubber Flooring Adhesive was used to adhere the new floorcovering to the subfloor. Suitable for a wide range of rubber floorcoverings, this acrylic emulsion adhesive has a high bond strength and is protected against bio-degradation.

In the communal kitchen and bathroom areas, Styccobond F60 Contact Adhesive was applied to secure the new Altro vinyl floorcovering. Styccobond F60 can withstand normal wet cleaning techniques and its instant bond and fast drying properties made it ideal for use in the halls of residence where the flooring contractors were on a strict time schedule to make sure all of the floors were refurbished by September.

Adam Ward, Contracts Manager at Futura Contracts, comments: “We use F. Ball’s adhesives on a regular basis and we speak to them often. We usually go straight to F. Ball for a specification as they always know which adhesive to use depending on the type of floorcovering and subfloor. F. Ball’s adhesives have always given us great results which we can be proud of – the university halls of residence were no different.”
